Why two copies of a birth, marriage, or death record?

Don’t be surprised if you find two different copies of a birth, marriage, or death record! But they should have identical content. The original document (called the unikat version) was kept on site, while second copy (called the duplikat version) was stored elsewhere. If the cover of the book of records is still intact, you will likely see unikat or duplikat written on the cover.
